Abstract

534,273. Artificial filaments ; treating textiles with liquids. FINLAYSON, D., and PERRY, R. G. Aug. 29, 1939, No. 24778. [Classes 2 (ii) and 15 (ii)] Artificial staple fibres made of or containing an organic derivative of cellulose are subjected while they are free to contract to the action of a shrinking medium containing an aliphatic aldehyde and water or an organic hydroxylcontaining compound. The treatment results in the crimping of the staple fibres. The aldehyde used may be acetaldehyde, formaldehyde, propaldehyde, butaldehydes, chloracetaldehyde, glyoxal, or succin-dialdehyde. The treatment medium may contain in addition to the aldehyde another solvent or softening agent, particularly a latent solvent such as ethyl acetate, or methylene or ethylene chloride. Organic hydroxyl compounds which may be used are methyl and ethyl alcohol and their homologues, and polyhydric alcohols such as glycol and glycerol. The treatment medium may also contain benzene, toluene, benzine, petrol ether, or other diluent. The treatment may be effected at reduced or elevated temperatures. It may be applied to high-tenacity wet-spun materials or to materials which have been stretched e.g. in hot water, wet steam, or a medium containing an organic swelling agent. The fibres may be in loose form or in the form of slivers or rovings. The fibres may be of cellulose acetate, formate, propiohate, butyrate, or other cellulose ester or ether. The Provisional Specification comprises also the treatment of cellulose derivative filaments, yarns, fabrics, and ribbons, to increase their extensibility.
