Abstract

534,227. Mounting steerable wheels on motor vehicles. ROVER CO., Ltd., and IVERSEN, P. A. SCOTT-. Aug. 28, 1939, Nos. 24648 and 24649. [Class 79 (v)] The steering pivot 19 of an independently - sprung steering wheel 11 is arranged to have a predetermined "camber projection " 18 and passes behind the wheel centre so that whilst its castor angle is greater than usual the resulting " castor projection" 22 is approximately the same as that normally arranged. The "projections " referred to are the respective distances at which the steering pivot axis intersects the ground to one side and in front of the vertical line or diameter passing through the central plane of the wheel. The result is that the castor effect is normal for straight running, but when the vehicle is rounding a curve and the outer steering wheel rises relatively to the frame the usual increased castor action, which causes heavy steering, is counteracted ;by a force couple due to the reaction of the ground on the wheel. In the construction shown the wheel is connected to the frame by the independent spring suspension described in Spec:- fication 518,597, [Group XXXII], and comprising upper and lower transverse links, 13, 14, a coil spring 15 acting on the lower link, and a radius or torque rod (not shown) fixed to a bracket 12 and extending rearwardly to a ball joint connection with the frame. Specification 2705/1900, [Class 79], also is referred to.
