Abstract

534,061. Ironing - machines and presses. BRITISH THOMSON - HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Dec. 22, 1939, No. 32737. Convention date, Dec. 22, 1938. [Class 138 (ii)] Ironing machines of the kind in which the roll is rotated and the shoe moved towards and away from the roll by power actuated mechanism, such as described in Specification 491,429, is provided with two gear trains for driving the roll at different speeds and means for selectively connecting either gear in the drive to adapt it for different classes of work. As shown, the machine comprises a base 4 supporting a head 3 mounting a tube 59 on which flanged hubs 48, 49 supporting the padded roll 2 can turn freely, the roll being secured to the outer end of a shaft 62 supported in and extending through the tube. The roll shaft 62 can be driven at two different speeds from a motor 64 which drives, through connecting shaft 70, a worm 74 gearing with a worm wheel 75 loose on the shaft 62 and provided with a pinion 76 gearing with planet pinions 80 formed integrally with pinions 83, and mounted on spindles 81 carried by a disc 82 fixed to the shaft 62. The respective pairs of planet pinions gear with internal teeth on loosely mounted wheels 92, 94 each provided with external teeth and recesses and with inclined flanges 79 whereby either wheel can be held against rotation for driving the shaft 62 through one or other of the planet pinions, or both left free, by an arm 86 movable along a splined shaft 87 by rack and pinion mechanism operated by a handle 97 to engage the dog with the recesses of either wheel, or to position it on the periphery of the flanges when a drive is not to be transmitted. The shoe 1 is mounted by a pivot 12 on the outer hinged portion of an arm 14 mounted on a tube 15 carried by the head 3 and housing a spindle 18 which controls the pivot of a pair of toggle levers controlling the shoe as described in Specification 509,684 wherein provision is made for turning back the shoe for cleaning &c. The shoe is moved towards and away from the roll and held in operative or inoperative position by a spring-pressure arm 106 on the spindle 18 engaging a cam 102 on a gear 103 geared with a gear 112 mounted on the tube 59 and formed integrally with a disc 113 carrying a spring- pressure radial key 114 adapted to engage notches 128 in the worm wheel 75 when released by lateral displacement of a C-member 121 which may be effected by an arm 125 on a spindle 126 operable by a lever 147; or by linkage 145, 143 from a knee-actuated piece 138 below the support 4. At each release the cam 102 is rotated half a revolution whereupon one of the opposing depressed portions of the cam is engaged and centred by the arm 106 to hold the shoe in operative or non-operative position. For continuous ironing a cam 135 on the gear 112 engages a spring pressed arm 136 on the spindle carrying the arm 86 whereby this is retained in locking engagement with one of the internally toothed wheels through which the roll is driven by the planet pinions. For pressing, the roll is not driven owing to the arm 86 being positioned on the flanges of the internally toothed wheels.
