Abstract
532,539. Wetting &c. agents. FIFE, J. G. (Naamlooze Vennootschap De Bataafsche Petroleum Maatschappij.). Aug. 8, 1939, No. 22857. [Classes 2 (iii) and 15 (ii)] Dense aggregates of surface tension reducing substances, which do not scatter in the air and do not float on water are prepared by compressing and moulding the powders obtained by spraying solutions of the substances into hot gases. The products may be compressed more than once and may also be re-ground. The compression of the light powder may be effected on rollers, in eccentric presses, hydraulic presses or continuous screw presses, but it is desirable to enable the enclosed air to escape as soon as possible to avoid a large rise in temperature. Before compression, the powders may be mixed with inert fillers or modifying agents, e.g., a higher alcohol. Surface tension reducing substances are defined as organic substances of high molecular weight which reduce the surface tension of water and aqueous solutions, and the following examples are mentioned :-salts of acid sulphuric acid alkyl esters such as the alkali metal, alkaline earth, heavy metal, amine, sulphonium and phosphonium salts, sulphuric acid esters containing alicyclic or aromatic groups or hydroxy, nitro, amino, ether or ester groups, salts of phosphoric acid esters and sulphonic acid salts.
