Abstract

531,980. Drawing. METALLGES. AKT.-GES. Aug. 9, 1939, No. 23029. Convention date, Sept. 20, 1938 [Class 83 (iv) ] Stainless steels particularly those of austenitic structure containing Cr and Ni are pickled with the usual strong mineral acids and then treated with an acid solution of a readily hydrolysable ferric salt. After this treatment and when coated with the usual lubricants such as wool grease, tallow &c. the steel is suitable for cold working more particularly drawing. A suitable pickling bath is water 300 parts by volume sulphuric acid (sp. gr. 1.84) 140 parts, hydrochloric acid (sp.-gr. 1.19) 160 parts, potassium persulphate solution (10 per cent.) 600 parts, the time being 365 minutes at 90‹ C. For steel containing 18 per cent. Cr and 8 per cent. Ni. the after treatment may be for 20 minutes at 90 to 95‹C. in a solution containing per litre 19 grams HCl and 10 grams ferric acetate.
