[Class 49] In a method of sterilizing molasses used in the production of yeast, the molasses is heated to a uniform sterilizing temperature whilst it flows in the form of thin layers or strings between plates or through a system of tubes subjected to the action of a heating agent, such as hot water, steam &c. The molasses and the heating agent are conducted in opposite directions through the apparatus. After the molasses has reached a predetermined sterilizing temperature, it is conducted through a channel the volume of which is so determined in relation to the amount of molasses flowing therethrough per unit of time that, when the molasses reaches the outlet of the channel, it has been kept at the sterilizing temperature for a predetermined time. The sterilizing apparatus may be combined with a purifying centrifuge.
