531,271. Grinding-machines. STIFTUNG, A. P. July 7, 1939, No. 19824. Convention date, June 22. [Class 60] In apparatus for grinding profiled workpieces having sections of different curvatures and dimensions such as round or half-round files, the work is carried by rocking members mounted on a table which is moved angularly about a pivot on a second table according to the varying profile of the work. The fixed frame 1 carries a slide 2 which may be moved on rollers 3 in a direction parallel with the surface of the grinding-disc 4 by means of a hand-lever 5. A second slide 8 moves on ball-bearing rings 10 on the slide 2 and is urged axially of the grinding- disc by a spring 11 whose tension may be adjusted by a screw 13. The slide 8 can also be moved by a handle 14 on a shaft 15 connected by a lost-motion slot 20 with a pinion 16 engaging a rack 17 on the slide 8. The lost motion enables the slide to yield under the influence of spring 11. A pivot 21 on the slide 8 carries a table 22 fitted with stocks 23 and 24 for the work piece 25. The headstock 23 carries a crank arm 26 which is oscillated from an adjustable crank-disc 28 connected through gears 31, 32 to a shaft carrying an arm 33 operated by a second arm 34 on an offset shaft, the arrangement being such that the rocking movement of the work is accelerated near the ends of the movement to prevent over-grinding of the edges of the file. The arm 34 is driven by a motor 37 on the table which also carries an operating handle 38 by which the table may be rocked about its pivot against a spring. 40. In operation the table is moved by the handle 14 to engage the work resiliently with the disc and the motor 37 started to effect a rocking movement of the work. The work is then moved along the grinding wheel surface by the handle 5 and the table is oscillated by the handle 38 as may be required for grinding the tapered end part of the file as shown in the upper part of Fig. 6. When round files are to be ground the work has a rotary movement about its axis instead of a rocking movement.
