Abstract

531,067. Electron oscillators ; valve generating and modulating circuits. LELAND STANFORD JUNIOR UNIVERSITY, BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF. March 17, 1939, No. 982/40. Convention date, April 14, 1938. Divided out of 530,785. [Classes 39 (i) and 40 (v)] An ultra high frequency generator, in which changes in electron vector velocity are produced in a beam exciting a substantially enclosed resonant circuit, is controlled by causing the beam to excite a further circuit comprising a hollow resonator operating on a harmonic frequency. The Figure shows an arrangement in which back coupling of the enclosed resonant devices 104, 105 is effected by a further device 106 of lower frequency but operating at one of its harmonic frequencies. In this way the frequency is stabilized, as the Q of the circuit 106 may be higher than that of the circuits 104, 105. The output is amplified through a frequency multiplier 111 also co-operating with the electron beam produced by cathode 101. A further beam is produced by cathode 114 and co-operates with amplifying devices 112, 113 which feed an aerial 116. Modulation may be effected at any of the three tubes 117 and will give both amplitude and frequency or phase changes. The former may be suppressed by applying the modulating voltage to grid 121 through amplifier 120. Alternatively amplitude modulation may be applied to the grid 121 or to spaced plates 122 which deflect the electron beam. The plates 122 may be excited at the oscillating frequency and may be replaced by a deflecting resonant device as described in Specification 523,712 to increase the output. Amplitude modulation may be applied through transformer 118 between the electron source 114 and the resonant device 112. At frequencies of the order 1000 megacycles parabolic reflectors may be used. Specifications 517,264, 529,771 and 530,785 also are referred to.
