[Class 40 (v)] In a wireless system in which the modulating signals comprise a train of pulses representing the variable edges of a series of pulses varied in duration in accordance with the amplitude of a sound or other signal wave as described in Specification 523,575, the complementary fixed edge or marking pulses required by the receiver to reproduce the original wave are separately transmitted on a different carrier frequency. In a multiplex system employing pulse modulation, all channels use the same pulse frequency; the pulse generators and receivers of the various channels are synchronized by the marking pulse transmitter, or the pulse generators may employ a common saw-toothed wave. The synchronizing pulses for the transmitters may be transmitted over wires in basic form or as a modulated carrier. In a two-way system, the marking pulses in one direction synchronize the pulse generator for the opposite direction of transmission. The marking pulses may also be time modulated to provide an additional channel, the fixed edges of such pulses being utilized at the receivers of other channels to derive synchronizing pulses. Further secrecy may be ensured by variation of the carrier frequencies. When the system includes television, the pulse generators may be synchronized by television synchronizing pulses.
