Abstract
529,581. Clutches. FAWICK, T. L. April 21, 1939, No. 12037. Convention date, May 13, 1938. [Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIV] An assembly for use as a brake or clutch comprises two relatively rotatable structures, one having a conical friction surface and the other including friction members and a directly-acting fluiddistensible member for moving the friction members for engagement with and disengagement from the conical surface in directions oblique to the axis of rotation or substantially normal to the conical surface. On the construction shown, the hub 10 of a wheel is provided with an annular conical brake member 13 adapted to work with arcuate brake shoes 15 mounted on an annular member 16 which is secured to a hub member 18 splined on the axle-housing 20. The member 18 is pressed by springs 23 against an adjustable nut 24. The member 16 has a channel defined by flanges 26, 27 with lug portions fitting in notches formed in the shoes 15. The shoes are pressed to their non-braking positions by springs. Beneath the shoes is a fluid-distensible annular rubber bag 32 having a stem 33 for connection to a source of fluid pressure. Instead of a rubber bag a series of bellows-like metal members, one for each shoe 15, may be provided, such member preferably having filter means, in the form of a cup, for lessening its fluid capacity.
