Abstract
528,946. Engraving. BENKOE, I. May 17, 1939, No. 14786. [Class 100 (ii)] In an engraving machine, the copy-carrier is advanced automatically, by means of abutments associated with the patterns, through a distance depending on the breadth of the pattern just copied. A carriage 4, Fig. 1, bearing the workpiece 5 is slidably mounted in aguideway 3. A revolving-cutter is carried by a support 13 on the pantographic linkage 9 ... 12, the tracerpin 8 of which is moved over a number of patterns. In one modification the patterns are carried on a plate 2 having notches 28, one for each pattern, which notches co-act with a pawl lever 30, 31 with spring 29. On a rod 19 coupled to the carriage 4 the sleeve 20 is idly mounted, loaded by the spring 21 and attached to a driver arm 22, which bears against the abutment 23 on one side and is coupled by the member 24 to a lever 26 fulcrummed at 25 and stressed by the spring 27. The outer end of the arm 22 when at rest clears the stops 32 on the plate 2, which stops are provided one for each pattern and limit the stroke of the lever 22 when it is operated. The stops 32 are so positioned that they permit the lever 22 to move a distance proportional to the desired spacing between one copy and the next. On operating the lever 25, 26, the lever 22 is pulled slewing the sleeve .20 and thus engaging with the rod 19, the whole then advancing the carriage 4 until the lever 22 meets the stop 32. On releasing the lever 25, 26, the sleeve 20 is returned idly with the lever 22 to its rest position by the spring 21. The pattern is locked in position by the pawl-lever 30, 31 during the engraving process and the above operation, but by depressing the lever 30, 31 and rotating the plate 2 another pattern may be brought into position. The carriage 4 is displaceable at right angles to the guides 3 for linespacing. Interchangeable pattern-plates 2 and patterns for inserting in a sector of the plate 2 are provided, the latter sector having a gap for this purpose, such inserted patterns each bearing an associated notch 28 and stop 32. In another modification, patterns 33 ... 35, Fig. 3, fit on a guide 36. Each pattern has a notch 37 engageable with a spring-loaded pin 38, 39 and preferably opposite the start of the representation, and stop 40, co-acting with a driver-member 41 for the rod 42 coupled with the carriage. The rod 42 bears a rack and the lever 41 in the form of a bell-crank pivoted at 44, and having a catch 43 co-acting with the rack 42. The pivot pin 44 is mounted on a loose sleeve 45 on the rod 42, and loaded by a spring 46. A spring 47, weaker than the spring 46, biases the driver 41, which latter is coupled by a member 24 to a lever. On operation of the member 24, the driver 41 is pulled, engages the rack 42 with the catch 43, and advances with the rod 42 and carriage until it co-acts with the stop 40 on the pattern plate 3, and on release the driver 41 is returned to the inoperative position by the spring 46, being disengaged from the rack by the spring 47. The pantographic linkage is pivoted about an axis 17 and counter-balanced by the motor 16 whereby the linkage can be raised to facilitate removal of the work 5.
