[Class 38 (iii)] The shunt field discharge resistance of a compound - wound motor is controlled in accordance with the current flowing in the shunt field winding so as to be disconnected at zero and low values thereof. A contactor in the circuit of the discharge resistance is operated by a coil in series with the shunt field.
