Abstract

528,128. Kinematograph apparatus. RADIO CORPORATION OF AMERICA. April 27, 1939, No. 12675. Convention date, May 28, 1938. [Class 97 (i)] [Also in Group XXXVIII] A film marking device comprises a lighttight conduit for guiding the film to and from a translation point, means for adjusting the film therein, means for setting indicia from outside said conduit, and means for simultaneously punching the film and photographing the indicia thereon. As shown, a sound film recording apparatus has a casing 6, Fig. 1, mounted on a base 5 and containing the film feeding rollers. The sound modulated light is admitted through an optical system 12 mounted on a support 13. The devices for making the identification marks are arranged in a rectangular upper extension 9 of the casing and on attachments thereto. The front of the casing 6, 9 is open and adapted to be closed by a door 7 on hinges 8. The film 15 enters through a slot 16 and leaves through a slot 30. On its way inward the film passes between a fixed flat plate 64 and a pressure pad 63, and on its way outward the film passes between curved plates 14, 65. The plate 64 has an opening 36, Fig. 2, opposite an opening 36 in a closure plate 17 through which an optical system 34 projects on the film an image of identification marks exposed at an opening 46 in a housing 32 attached to the side of the casing 9 and containing the optical system 34 and a lamp 35 for illuminating the marks at the opening 46. The marks are on a parallel set of slides 37 adjustably mounted outside the housing 32 and held in position by yielding spring catches 42. The slides have similar marks on the inner and outer faces, and the outer marks are reflected by a mirror 47 to be visible to a person in front of the apparatus, so that the slides can easily be set for the desired marks. On the opposite side of the casing, a lever 51, Fig. 4, is pivoted at 51<SP>1</SP> and adapted to operate a punching device and a switch. After the indicia slides 37 have been set, the lever 51<SP>1</SP> is depressed and the following operations are performed. The lever 51 drives a plunger 50 inward against a spring 52 ; the plunger 50 presses the curved guides 14, 65 together with the film against a punch 54 which makes a hole in the centre of the film; the piece punched out of the film is received in the hollow inner end of the plunger 50, and, when the lever is subsequently released and the plunger moved outwards by the spring 52, the punched piece falls through a chute 58 into a hollow removable cap 59. Simultaneously with the punching of the hole, the depression of the lever makes a projection 61 thereon bear on a member 60 which closes a switch to light the lamp 35 thereby producing a photographic impression on the film of the identification marks on the slides 37. The switch opens of itself when the lever is released. A ruby glass 21 permits observation of the energization of the lamp. To ensure that the film shall be in the focus of the lens system 34, it is pressed against the flat plate 64 by the pressure plate 63 when the lever 51 is depressed, the pressure plate 63 being attached to a tubular rod 66 containing a spring buffer 69 co-operating with a pin 70 extending from the head 71 of the plunger 50, whereby the desired movement is transmitted from the plunger 50 to the pressure plate 63. The central hole and the identification marks may be made at the beginning or the end or at both the beginning and the end of a film take or sequence.
