[Class 83 (iii)] A lathe, planing or like tool A having a hard alloy cutting tip B is provided with a protecting piece D arranged to prevent chips X, Fig. 3, deflected by the chip breaker C, from impinging upon and damaging the part a<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 4, of the cutting edge which is not in use. The piece D may be attached by screws E, additional holes F being provided so that the piece D may be moved back as the tool is ground away by re-sharpening.
