Abstract
525,898. Drawing sheet glass. DEUTSCHE TAFELGLAS AKT.-GES. (DETAG.). March 2, 1939, No. 6899. Convention date, April 2, 1938. [Class 56] Relates to the method of drawing sheet glass in which coolers 9 are placed opposite the lower part of the sheet 8, on both sides, for the purpose of solidifying the glass. According to the present invention, the coolers are arranged above the meniscus 7 away from the surface of the molten glass 1, and the radiation of heat from the outer layers of the sheet just above the meniscus, where the glass is still plastic, is retarded or counteracted, in order to avoid or reduce the formation of waves in the sheet. The sheet is drawn upwards from a debiteuse 2, or any other known device for anchoring the meniscus, and passes between water-cooled radiators 9 which are adjustable relatively to the sheet and may be tilted, as shown. Loss of heat from the lower part of the sheet is retarded by currents of hot air from perforated pipes 10 which are arranged to direct the air towards the outer edges of the debiteuse, so that it is further heated as it passes upwards over the meniscus 7 and the sheet. Instead of air, hot gases from the body of the furnace, or combustible gases, may be passed through the pipes 10. Electric heaters may be arranged to radiate heat on to the sheet. Smoky air may be used to assist in observing and adjusting the direction of the air currents.
