Abstract

525,635. Determining physical qualities of materials. NAPIER & SON, Ltd., D., and RAMSAY, F. R. F. Feb. 24, 1939, No. 6144. [Class 37] Apparatus for indicating conditions in the cylinders of internal combustion engines comprises means for passing a current between the points of the sparking plug and measuring this current, without interfering with the normal working of the sparking plug. An auxiliary gap A, preferably of the quenched type, is connected in series with the lead to the sparking plug B from the magneto C. Across the sparking plug points is connected a circuit comprising a rectifier D, a high resistance E, a direct-current meter F, and a battery G. The rectifier D opposes the passage of the spark voltage through the meter circuit but allows current from the battery G to pass. A resistance H may be connected between the gap A and the sparking plug B to assist in quenching the spark and preventing high-frequency oscilla' tions. An electrolytic condenser may be connected in parallel with the meter F to provide additional damping and a variable shunt resistance may be employed to vary its scale. A diode or other rectifier may be connected in the lead from the ignition apparatus C instead of or in addition to the series spark gap A. A high resistance may be used in place of the valve, or a series condenser in place of the gap. The current through the meter F is an indication of the richness of the mixture, maximum current corresponding to the condition for maximum power. Heavy detonation causes a small rise of current. In a modification a high-frequency spark is employed and is prevented from passing through the meter circuit by a high resistance or high frequency choke. The spark may be produced by means of a series gap having one electrode connected to the ignition apparatus and the other electrode connected through a high frequency coil to earth and through a condenser to the sparking plug. In another modification the meter and battery are connected in series with the lead to the ignition apparatus, the circuit including a high-frequency choke and being shunted by a condenser or spark gap to filter the spark impulses.
