Abstract

524,984. Controlling aircraft. DILLON' J. M. Jan. 9, 1939, No. 718. [Class 4] A wing, or other surface, comprises a main body portion, an auxiliary section adapted to be nested beneath or extended downwardly and rearwardly therefrom, an upper section pivoted to the main body portion, and means for permitting air to flow through the wing from the under to the upper surface. In one form, Fig. 1, an auxiliary section 3 mounted on links 5, 6 and normally nested beneath the wing 1 is movable into the positions shown and is connected by linkwork to an upper section 2 pivoted at 4 which normally closes the upper end of a slot 8 through the wing. The lower end of the slot is normally closed by a flap 9 interconnected to the two sections 2, 3. In a modification the slot is further back and its entrance is normally closed by the leading edge of the section 3, and in another modification the slot is placed further forward and the section 2 is pivoted to the leading edge of the wing. A flap 7, which may be separately adjusted, may be provided at the trailing edge of the section 3. Fig. 4 shows' a modification in which the upper section comprises a pivoted nose section 32. In this case a link 40 connected to the forward link 35 of a section 33 has a slotted connection at its forward end to a toggle link 42, 43, connected to the section 32, so that the section 32 is closed positively when the section 33 is raised but leaves the section 32 free to rise under air flow when the section 33 is lowered. A flap 44 is provided on the main section of the wing and a slot may be opened as the flap 44 is depressed. Such a flap may be provided in the other forms described. Individual hydraulic control may be provided for the two movable sections of the wing. The two movable sections may extend over the full width of the wing or only over parts thereof and may turn about hinges extending for their full length or they may be pivoted at their tips and their innermost edges be tiltable. The leading edge of the auxiliary section 3 may be extended so that when the section is fully depressed the leading edge closes the gap beneath the wing to act as an air brake. The passages through the wings may be arranged so as not to be wholly closed when the movable sections are in normal position. Specification 509,307 is referred to in the Provisional Specification.
