[Class 94 (i)] A method of enclosing an article, such as a batch of cigarettes, in a wrapper consists in folding the wrapper about the bottom and two sides of the article, inserting a longitudinal plate between the upstanding ends of the wrapper, pressing the upstanding edges into the angles between the plate and the article and then withdrawing the plate and securing the upstanding edges together to form a longitudinal seam. In the construction shown, a batch of cigarettes 1, Fig. 1, is pressed with a wrapper into one of a series of movable supports 3, as described in Specification 352,659, leaving the ends 2 of the wrapper projecting upwards. Vertical plates 28, Fig. 4, having base plates 29, are moved inwards towards one another and then downwards on to the cigarettes. Presser members 67, Fig. 1, are then moved towards the plates 28 and cause the upstanding ends 2 of the wrapper to fold over the top of the cigarettes into the angles between the plates 28, 29. The plates 28 are then withdrawn, and the ends of the wrapper are pressed by the members 67 to form a longitudinal seam. If the wrapper is composed of or treated with heat-sealable material, the pressers are provided with electric heaters 71. The pressers 67 are then withdrawn, and the movement of the support 3 carries the package beneath a presser 67, the upstanding seams being folded down on to the package, as shown in Fig. 5. The ends of the wrapper are folded by any suitable mechanism.
