Abstract

523,645. Recovery of sulphur-dloxide. BACON, R. F. Jan. 21, 1939, No. 2144. Convention date, Jan. 21, 1938. [Class 1 (ii)] Relates to processes for recovering sulphur dioxide from mixtures with other gases, in which the sulphur dioxide is absorbed in an aqueous absorbing medium, and the latter is heated to expel the sulphur dioxide. According to the invention, the aqueous medium contains a borate as an absorbent of sulphur dioxide. Further, the process may involve the use of a boric acid in conjunction with a borate or with an absorption agent other than a borate, e.g. a sulphite to aid in the liberation of the absorbed sulphur dioxide by heating. Preferably sodium, potassium or ammonium tetraborates and magnesium metaborate are employed for the absorption, and orthoboric acid for aiding in the liberation of the sulphur dioxide. The borate may or may not be in saturated solution, or it may be in excess of the amount required for saturation. Liberation of the sulphur dioxide is most effectively performed when the absorbing medium is saturated with free boric acid at boiling temperature. The temperature of absorption may be anywhere between the freezing point of the solution and 75‹C., and for liberation of the absorbed sulphur dioxide the solution may be heated to a temperature from 85‹C. to the boiling point. Usually the working temperatures are 70-75‹C. and about 85‹C. respectively. Tables are given showing results obtained with varying concentrations of reagents (borax and other borates and sulphites with or without free boric acid in each case), under various working conditions. Apparatus particularly suitable for carrying out the invention is described in Specification 523,646, [Group XII].
