Abstract
521,757. Heel-attaching machines &c. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd. (United Shoe Machinery Corporation). Nov. 25, 1938, No. 34307. [Classes 17 (i) and 89 (iii)] A gang of fastenings are cut from strings of fibrous material as described in Specification 253,117, [Class 17 (ii)], and inserted into an end portion of a shoe. A turret carries six sets of fastener drivers so that the pattern may be varied. The drivers perform a pricking stroke before the fasteners are positioned beneath them, and both pricking and driving strokes are yielding so that the drivers may be stopped by a lastplate. Water is fed to the fasteners as they are driven to cause them to swell and grip well, and to lubricate the passages. A worksupporting jack 16 partially counter-balanced by springs 24 is carried on a slide so that it may be pushed rearwardly into operative position when the work has been jacked. The jack is supported on a threaded block 30 engaging a screw-thread rotated by a pinion 50 gearing with a rack connected to a treadle 56. The treadle serves for the preliminary measurement of the work, a cam 38 raising a roll 36 to clamp the work when the power cycle of the machine has started. An eccentric operated by a handwheel 64 adjusts the ,amount of power thrust. A turret 76 carries six sets of drivers 116, 117 arranged in different designs. The turret is locked by a plunger 182 engaging a bore 107 in the set at operative position at the front of the machine. The other five sets are held raised each by a plunger 172 engaging a cam on the central bearing of the turret, a recess at the front allowing the plunger of this set to release its drivers for vertical reciprocation. The drivers are reciprocated by a cross-head 132 carried by a pair of vertical plungers 130 reciprocated by a pair of cams 144 engaging rolls 142. The crosshead is provided with horizontal guideways into which a projection on each driver unit slides as this reaches operative position at the front of the machine. The drivers around the sides and end of the heel are connected to the cross-head through toggle links 156 urged toward the straight position by a spring 154. This arrangement allows the drivers to yield on meeting an obstruction such as the last plate, the pressure on the drivers decreasing as the yield increases. A similar arrangement with a weaker spring is provided for the pair of drivers at the heel breast. The turret carries, below the drivers, eorresponding dies 84 for receiving the fasteners. These are fed by a rack 240 connected with the crosshead 132 by a lost-motion connection and driving feed rolls, 234, 238 by pawl and ratchet gearing, a brake 268 normally holding the rolls stationary. The strings to form the fastenings are fed through a shear plate 88 in the rear of the die 84 at the front of the machine and into a loader block 290 carrying at its under side an auxiliary shear plate 326. The loader block has an arm pivoted to a crank pin 298 which turns the block axially to shear off a set of fastenings and also advances the fastenings to the die at the operative position. When it is desired to change the fastening design the feed rolls are detached from their driving gear and turned backwards to withdraw the ends of the strings from the shearing block at operative position. A cam-driven pump 336 supplies water to a feet pad positioned below the guide passages of the fastener block at the operative position as the drivers are rising from their pricking stroke.
