[Class 56] A method of making rock wool consists in melting the raw material in a cupola furnace the heat of which is used to generate the steam that shreds the molten material, the shredded material being blown into a chamber which is provided with adjustable side walls and with a conveyer for removing " shot." A binding material and oil may be introduced into the steam before shredding takes place, and a device may be provided for forming the wool into sheets. The furnace comprises a melting-chamber 1 on which is superposed the boiler 2 and a device 3 for preheating the air for the combustion in the furnace. The steam passes to a nozzle 7 arranged in a conduit 17 into which the molten material passes, and the shredded material or " wool collects in a chamber 18. A mixture of starch with borax and water from a tank 11, and oil from a tank 14, may be fed into the steam pipe to be mixed with the wool. The chamber contains two conveyers 20, 21 which move in opposite directions. The conveyer 21 receives the " shot " and carries it to a receptacle 22, while the conveyer 20 receives the wool and carries it out of the chamber. The sides of the chamber are adjustable to enable the wool to settle evenly on the conveyer. The wool may be carried by the conveyer under pressure rollers 23 which form it into a sheet, and the sheet is passed through a drying. oven 24 supplied with hot air from a heater 25. The sheet then passes to cutting knives 30 to be trimmed to a predetermined width, and a planing device 34 may be provided to reduce the sheet to a required thickness.
