Abstract

521,448. Lubricating internal combustion engines. THOMAS, A., and GUY, W. E. Nov. 10, 1938, No. 32601. [Class 12 (iii)j . Upper cylinder lubricant is admitted to the starter jet air passage of the carburetter of an internal-combustion engine when the strangler valve controlling the starter jet is operated. In the apparatus shown a partial withdrawal of the strangler rod 16a mounted on a vehicle dashboard opens a valve 15 against the resistance of weak spring 19 to connect a flexible tube 4 leading from a lubricant reservoir 1 to flexible tubes 20, 21 leading respectively to a tube 9 opening into the air passage 6 of a starter jet orifice 13 of a carburetter and to a point in the induction passage adjacent the carburetter throttle valve. When the withdrawal movement of the rod 16a is completed a plunger 11 is raised against the resistance of stronger spring 12 to open the inlet 23 from the passage 6 to the induction passage. A spring-pressed valve 10 prevents the escape of lubricant from the tube 9 until suction occurs in the passage 6. The rod 16a may be held in its partially withdrawn position if given a slight turn so as to cause a projection 16d in the bush 16b of the rod to engage with a groove crossing a longitudinal groove in the rod. Lubricant can then pass through the tube 21 to the induction passage. The lubricant supply may be adjusted by a valve 5 on the reservoir 1. A sight tube is fitted in the feed pipe 4. In a modification the tube 20 is connected to a tube 26 fitted with a non- return valve 27 and projecting at right angles from a tube 24 which is screwed into the hole in the starter jet passage normally receiving the air adjusting screws. The airadjusting screw 25 is instead fitted in the end of the tube 24. Means may be provided to allow only a measured quantity of lubricant to be supplied at one period and the feed pipe may be controlled by a valve operated by solenoid in circuit with the engine starter.
