Abstract

520,999. Submarine cables. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., SCOTT, T. R., and WESTON, W. K. Nov. 4, 1938, No. 32032. [Class 36] In a submarine cable, the insulation comprises a water-responsive material which, when brought into contact with water, as through a break, undergoes a change of state which tends to minimize the flow of water along the cable. Materials which swell, such as gelatine or agar agar, or materials which dissolve in the water and increase its viscosity, such as methyl cellulose, or admixtures thereof may be used. In cables having additional packings in the form of wormings between pairs or quads, one, some or all of the wormings may be replaced by one or more rods, tubes or tapes of the waterresponsive material. In low capacity cables for carrier operation with relatively large conductors, wormings of the material may be placed between the conductors. For an airspace high frequency cable, e.g. coaxial, screened pair or screened quad, some or all of the spacing means, such as discs or helices, may be of the water-responsive material ; such a cable mav also have inside the outer conductor a tube of such material. Specification 459,518 is referred to.
