Abstract

520,657. Dyeing textiles; synthetic resin compositions. INTERCHEMICAL CORPORATION. Oct. 28, 1938, No. 31228. Convention date, Sept. 15. [Classes 2 (iii) and 15 (ii)] A textile fabric is provided with decorations or markings comprising a urea-formaldehyde resin, a colouring matter and sufficient plasticizer to render the treated yarns flexible. Specfied plasticizers are blown oils and alkyd resins. In examples : (1) a composition comprising a 50 per cent. solution of a urea-formaldehyde resin in butanol, a 50 per cent. solution of a castor oil-modified alkyd resin in xylene and hydrated ferric oxide with further additions of butanol and xylene is printed on a cotton fabric, which is then heated at 121‹C.; the print is of good handle and resistance to crocking, washing and dry cleaning ; the solution of urea-formaldehyde resin is obtained by adding urea to aqueous formaldehyde at 60-65‹C. containing phosphoric acid, heating for 2 hours at 85-90‹C., adding an excess of butanol, heating under reflux for 2 hours and distilling off water and butanol until the solution contains 50 per cent. of the resin ; the solution of alkyd resin is obtained by heating a mixture of phthalic anhydride, glycerol and castor oil fatty acids at 230‹C. in presence of carbon dioxide, cooling to 150‹C. and adding an equal weight of xylene ; (2) a composition containing solution as in (1) of urea-formaldehyde resin in butanol, a soya-modified alkyd resin, xylene, a hydrogenated petroleum of boiling- point 135-190‹C. and Monastral fast blue BS is printed on a cotton or rayon fabric ; the alkyd resin is obtained by heating a mixture of phthalic anhydride, glycerol and soya fatty acids at 240‹C. and cooling in presence of carbon dioxide ; (3) a composition containing a 50 per cent. solution of a urea-formaldehyde resin in butanol and xylene, blown castor oil and Monastral fast green GS with further additions ,of butanol and xylene is printed on a cotton fabric ; (4) a composition containing a 50 per cent. solution of a thiourea-formaldehyde resin in butanol, the alkyd resin of (2) and Caledon brilliant blue R with further additions of butanol and xylene is printed on a cotton fabric.
