Abstract
520,040. Submersible motor-pump assemblies ; centrifugal seals. BYRON JACKSON CO. Oct. 11, 1938, No. 29458. Convention date, Dec. 8, 1937. [Classes 110 (i) and 122 (v)] In a submersible motor - pump assembly a seal between the shaft and motor casing is carried by a separate shaft 40 operatively connected with the motor and pump shafts 34, 92. The motor and seal assembly are insertible successively as units into the motor housing. This comprises a stationary sleeve member 64 projecting into mercury contained in a space between the seal shaft and a sleeve 56 carried thereby. A stationary guard 75 is arranged between the motor casing and shaft seal to avoid turbulence of the oil in the casing. Mercury is supplied to the seal through an orifice 94 and thence through a clearance between the sleeve 64 and the shaft. Pipes 98 and 100 communicate respectively with the external fluid and motor casing to equalize internal and external pressures. Specification 520,039 is referred to.
