[Class 95] In an apparatus for spraying the interior surface of articles open at each end, each article is brought by step-by-step conveying mechanism to a spraying station at which a spraying nozzle is moved into and out of the article through one end thereof whilst the article is rotated, and the spray is controlled so that it operates whilst moving into the article, exhaust means, having an inlet adjacent the other end of the article, being provided to remove fumes produced during spraying. The apparatus shown is designed for spraying the interior of shell cases, the bases of which are open at the central fuse hole, and comprises a turntable 18 with carrier 19, driven from a motor 1 through a Geneva movement 13, 16. Each carrier comprises a part 21, which can be rotated by contact with a tensioned driven belt 22 as each case approaches the spraying station. A spray carriage 27 is movable vertically, up and down, by the engagement of a roller 28 in the track 41 of a cam drum 12. The spray device 29, 42 operates only on its upward stroke, and only when a case is in position, the compressed air supply to the spray being controlled by a cam 14 and by the shell case itself. Adjustable radius arms 24 hold the top ends of the shell cases. Fumes are removed from the case during spraying by the fan 30 and trunk 47, and a trunk 46 leads to the station next in advance of the spraying station, to remove fumes from the downwardly directed open mouth of the cases immediately after spraying. The apparatus may be modified so as to spray the external surface also, of the articles. According to the Provisional Specification, the air supply to the spraying nozzle, and a supply of compressed air to exhaust the fumes, may be controlled by electric solenoids.
