Abstract

519,488. Stereoscopic projection WIEMER, K., WIEMER, P., and SCHNEIDER AKT.-GES., H. Oct. 19, 1938, No. 30275. Convention date, Oct. 19, 1937. [Class 97 (i)] Circularly polarized light is used for projecting the components of stereoscopic pairs of pictures; the pictures are viewed through analysing spectacles. As shown in Fig. 1, light from a source 1 and condenser 2 passes through a Wollaston prisin 3 or other doubly-refracting medium, and the ordinary and extraordinary rays, 4, 5 respectively, pass through prisms 6, separate images on the film 7, and separate projection lenses 8. Circularly polarizing media producing rotations in opposite senses are provided in the .beams 4, 5. Fig. 2 shows a system for using both ordinary and extraordinary rays for projecting a single image, the whole system being duplicated for the second image. The light from a source 1 is divided by a Nicol prism 3, the emergent path being rendered parallel by a mirror 9, and their planes of polarization being turned by media in vessels 10, 11 so as to be identical; a Fresnel parallelepiped 12 produces circular polarization, the senses being, opposite in the two systems. A doubly-refracting lens may be used as plane polarizing means. The analysing spectacles have panes each comprising a polarizing layer and a quarter wave plate such as a sheet of material having the Registered Trade Mark " Cellophane held to it mechanically or by cement; each pane extingishes one of the two images viewed.
