Abstract

519,083. Pressure gauges. CALLENDER'S CABLE & CONSTRUCTION CO., Ltd., and VINCENT, R. S. Sept. 21, 1938, No. 27543. [Class 106 (ii)] For measuring more particularly low pressures, the pressure to be measured is balanced against the vapour pressure of a heated liquid, the temperature of the vapour being a measure of the fluid pressure. A long glass tube closed at each end has at the lower end 1 some liquid mercury 3. An electric heating coil 4 surrounds the portion 1 of the tube and is enclosed in asbestos lagging 5. A branch connection 6 near the upper end of the tube leads to the pressure fluid to be measured. From the centre of the upper closing wall extends downwards to near the surface of the mercury, an inner tube 7 having a small base the lower end of which is closed and accommodates a thermo-electric junction 8, the leads 9 of which pass upwards through the tube to an exterior indicating or recording instrument. A spider spring 10 locates the tube 7 centrally of the main tube. The external surface of the main tube platinized at 12 and surrounded by glass and lagging 11 in the neighbourhood of the thermoelectric junction. The temperature measured corresponds to the boiling point of mercury at the pressure to be measured and the electric instrument is calibrated in pressures.
