Abstract
518,179. Moulds; casting' processes. GATHMANN, E. Aug. 16, 1938, No. 24179., Convention date, June 1, 1938. [Class 83 (i)] A mould for casting steel or non- ferrous ingots has upwardly diverging side walls, the 'divergency of at least two walls of the lower portion 3, which comprises between 20 per cent to 50 per cent of the total height of the mould chamber, being greater than that of the upper portion of the walls. In the form shown, the mould is of approximately square cross section and if the maximum diameter is twenty inches then the lower portion 3 should have about four times the divergency of the intermediate portion 4. An upper portion 5 comprising from 5 per cent to 20 per cent of the total height is of substantially uniform cross section. Corrugations R, S extend downwardly from the top of the mould and merge into the lower portion 3. the bottom of the mould comprises a slightly dished central portion 2a connected to the walls 3 by a concave portion 2b having a radius of between 5 per cent and 20 per cent of the maximum diameter of the mould cross section. In order to avoid erosion of the portion 3 when casting, molten metal is poured in slowly until the lower portion is filled. Specification 505,444 is referred to.
