Abstract
517,869. Cutting and slicing vegetables &c. ELDRED; H. R. Aug. 6, 1938, No. 23248. [Class 5 (i)] In a machine for cutting, e.g., into small cubes, vegetables, hard fruit &c. the vegetables &c. are first forced by a crank-operated piston or plunger through a grid or grating, and are then severed by a transverse cut by means of blades mounted on a shaft which is geared to the crankshaft which operates the piston or plunger. A casing a is provided with a hopper b and a cylindrical chamber c in which reciprocates a piston d operated by a connecting-rod d', crank d<2>, toothed wheel e, and worm f from a shaft f<1> which may be driven from a pulley h and an electric motor i. The chamber c terminates in a flanged opening k on which is screwed a bracket l carrying a series of knives l<2> forming a grid, through which vegetables &c., e.g., potatoes, are forced in lengths to to be cut transversely by the blades of a rotary cutter m on the shaft f<1>, In a modification, the potatoes &c. during the forward movement of the piston d are gripped by the ends of rods slidable through the piston under the control of a cam on the crankshaft.
