Abstract

517,475. Dyes. MOILLIET, J. L., THURLOW, H. J., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. July 29, 1938, No. 22539. [Class 2 (iii)] Water-insoluble organic colouring matters are obtained in dry powder form, of soft texture and ready dispersibility, by adding to an aqueous paste of the colouring matter a volatile organic liquid, which has a B. Pt. between 60‹C. and 250‹C., is substantially insoluble in water, and is not a solvent for the colouring matter, drying the mixture so obtained, and pulverizing the product if necessary. The process may be applied to phthalocyanine dyes, vat dyes, barium and other salts of lake dyestuffs, azo-dyes, and the lakes of basic dyes with complex acids, e.g. phosphotungstic acid. Suitable organic liquids are toluene, trichloro-ethylene, tetrachloroethylene, industrial white spirit, amyl acetate, dimethylaniline, senchone, fusel oil, and mixtures of these liquids. In examples, products are made from copper phthalocyanine (Specification 464,126), chlorinated copper phthalocyanine, 1:2<1>-dianthraquinonylamine, and m-nitro-p-toluidine-azo-p-naphthol. The barium salt of Lake Red C, the iron compound of nitroso-#-naphthol, and 6:6<1>- dichloro-2:2<1>-bisthionaphthene indigo are also mentioned as starting materials.
