Abstract
517,436. Electrolytic production of hydroxylamine. I. G. FARBENINDUSTRIE AKT.-GES. July 27, 1938, No. 22350. Convention date, Aug. 17, 1937. Drawings to Specification. [Class 41] [Also in Group III] Hydroxylamine hydrochloride is obtained in the solid state following the electrolytic reduction of a mixture of nitric acid and hydrochloric acid in a diaphragm cell by continuing the reduction in the cell until the catholyte is nearly saturated with hydroxylamine hydrochloride removing the catholyte from the cell, and introducing gaseous hydrogen chloride into the catholyte, while cooling, whereby hydroxylamine hydrochloride separates in a solid state. The process may operate continuously the mother liquor remaining after the separation being reconducted to the cathode compartment of the cell after the consumed nitric acid has been made good. The small increase in volume of the catholyte formed during the cycle by the addition of the nitric acid, the addition of the washing lye for the separated product (if such is employed), or electric osmosis, may be separated and saturated with further hydrogenchloride while strongly cooling, until hydroxylamine hydrochloride has precipitated nearby completely, the remaining mother liquor being added to the anolyte with a corresponding removal of anolyte from the system.
