Abstract

516,865. Projectiles; fuzes. SAGEB SOC. ANON. DE GESTION ET D'EXPLOITATION DE BREVETS. June 27, 1938, No. 5020/39. Convention date. June 28, 1937. [Class 9 (i)] Relates to projectiles which are propelled, after leaving the gun, by a longitudinallyperforated reaction charge carried in a container Fig. 3, attached to the base of the shell 30, the gases from which charge emerge through rearwardly-directed nozzles 5. According to the invention, the reaction charge, such as 67, is separated from the base of the shell by studs or stops 62, Fig. 4, which provide free access for the gases to the jets 5. The reaction charge may be sub-divided in various ways, such, for example, as shown in enlarged end views in Figs. 8 and 11, so as to provide a multiplicity of longitudinal channels or passages and ensure uniform burning of the charge. The charge may, be ignited by the gases from the,gun cartridge, which may rupture a diaphragm closing an opening 65 in the base of the container 2, or may operate through a delay-action fuze, Fig. 6. The fuse comprises a striker 70 which is driven by the gun gases onto a cap 71 which ignites through a slow-burning composition 73, an ignition charge 74, which ruptures a seal 75 and ignites, the reaction charge in the container. The nozzles 5 are closed by membranes or by conical stoppers 66, Fig. 7, which are only ruptured when a sufficient pressure is developed in the container.
