Abstract
516,383. Discharging static electricity. CHADFIELD, C. R. A. June 24. 1938, No. 18793. [Class 35] Static electric charges carried by travelling webs or threads 7 such as photographic films, silk or rubber threads during manufacture are neutralized by discharges from discharge points 19 carried by copper or brass rods 18, 18a these being charged with static electricity of opposite sign from two rotors. The rotors consist of brass rods 2, 2a carried by insulating end discs 1, which are mounted on shafts 3, connected so that they rotate in the same direction. Pairs of arms 11, 12 on each shaft form through brushes 13 earthing contacts for the rods 2, 2a; further brushes 15, 15a connect these rods to discharge rods 18, 18a and brushes 14, 14a are connected to insulated tubes 9. 9a similar to tubes 8, 8a which are opposite the rotors at the point of contact of one set of the brushes 13. The tubes 8a and 9 are connected together. The tube 8 is charged with electricity from a static machine such as described in Specification 516 384, or by the web 7 in which case the speed of the rotor is such that the rods 2 move at a greater speed than the web when they are opposite the web. The charge on the web or tube 8 induces a charge of opposite sign on the rods 2 they being earthed when opposite the tube. Through the brush 14 the tube 8a is charged and this in turn charges the rods 2a. The brushes 15, 15a collect charges of opposite sign for the points 19.
