Abstract

515,653. Punching; shearing; sheet metal joints. WARE, H. M., and WARE & CO., Ltd., H. M. June 24, 1938. No. 18770. [Class 83 (iv)] [Also in Group VII] A machine for securing a metal fastening strip c to a tab b at the mouth of a paper container a comprises means for cutting successive strips form a continuous strip of metal, means for punching prongs 80 from the strip and through the tab, and means for clenching the prongs. A strip of metal 5 of a width equal to the length of the strips c is fed from a reel 4 by feed rolls 10, 12 so that its leading end enters a slot 15 in a fixed plate 14. The roll 10 is adjustable by means of a bracket 11. The leading end overlies a plunger 22 above which the tab b is supported by a bracket 65. The plunger 22 is raised so that a strip c is severed by a knife 24 co-operating with a fixed knife 18. Punches 35 carried by plungers 38 are then raised to punch the prongs through the tab. Finally, slides 50, operated by plungers 52 with cam grooves 53, are moved inwardly to flatten the prongs on the tab. The plungers are operated by cams on a shaft 32, which may be actuated by a rack 62 and treadle. The metal strip is fed, as the plunger 22 descends, by a pawl and ratchet 75, 76 operated by a cam 70 on the shaft 32. Automatic means may be provided for ejecting the container from the 'slot 15 before the metal strip is fed. Specification 485,129, [Group XVII], is referred to.
