Abstract

515,129. Tyre treads and other non-slip surfaces. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd., and WILSON, J. A. June 11, 1938, No. 17371. [Class 144 (ii)] [Also in Groups V and X] A non-slip surface for tyre treads and other purposes is produced. as follows. A composite strip is first formed by superpusing a layer 2 of fast-vulcanizing rubber mix on a layer 1 of relatively slow mix and vulcanized to cure the layer 2 and only partially cure the layer 1. The composite strip is then superposed on a base 3, also of slow-vulcanizable mix, and the exposed surface of the layer 2 chemically treated, as by hydrochloric, nitric, or sulphuric acid, chlorine, or other halogen element or oxides of nitrogen, to render this surface of weakened adhesion to rubber. After forming perforations 5 through the layers, 2, 1, the strip is cut into blocks 6. The latter are then turned over into the positions shown in Fig. 3, assembled to form a continuous length and vulcanized under pressure to produce the finished material, shown in Fig. 4, having zones of weakened adhesion which, when the material is stretched in use, result in the formation of slits 10, Fig. 5, at the wearing surface.
