515,127. Artificial silk; apparatus for treating threads with liquids. COURTAULDS, Ltd., HEGAN, H. J., GIVENS, J. H., and WEIGHAM, W. R. June 9, 1938, No. 17187. [Classes 2(ii) and 15(i)] Artificial threads produced from viscose are led from a guide situated above the coagulating bath, through a slot in the wall of a receptacle containing so much of a treatment liquid that liquid continually pours out through the slot, through the liquid in the receptacle, and then from the upper surface of the liquid to the collecting device. The receptacle is provided in one wall only with a slot for each thread which it is desired to treat therein. It may be adapted to be fitted on to a machine for the production of artificial threads in a position higher than and in close proximity to the coagulating bath and between the bath and the collecting devices and it may comprise a tank extending practically the whole length of the coagulating bath. The slots in the receptacle may be provided with U-shaped glass guides. The wall of the receptacle may be recessed or stepped so that each thread enters at right angles to the wall. As shown in Fig. 1, viscose is extruded from jet 1 in coagulating bath 2. The thread 3 passes round godet 4 and then through slot 6 in a stepped portion 7 of tank 8 containing hot water. It then passes round guide 9 and out of the tank to godet 10 and box 11. The thread may be stretched as it passes between godets 4 and 10. As shown in Fig. 2, the thread 3 leaves the godet 4 and passes through slots 6 in the walls 7 of the tiered receptacle 8. Hot water flows continuously from the top tank. A constant cascade' of water through the slots 6 is thus produced. The thread passes in a straight line from godet 4 to the top godet 10 without touching the receptacle or any guides. If desired the receptacle may be provided with a chute at each slot, shaped,and disposed so that the thread passes along the chute without contacting with it. Since the chute is always full of liquid flowing from the receptacle, the thread is totally immersed in the liquid over a greater length than would be the case without the chute. Instead of hot water, the treating liquid may be hot dilute acid or cold sulphuric acid of mercerizing strength. The collecting device may be a centrifugal box, a bobbin, or a device for cutting the thread to form staple fibre.
