Abstract

514,587. Catalytic dehydrogenation. DISTILLERS CO., Ltd., and STANLEY, H. M. June 1, 1938, No. 16423. [Class 1 (i)] [Also in Group IV] alpha-methyl styrene is prepared by dehydrogenating isopropyl benzene in the presence of an oxide of vanadium at 450-700‹C. The oxide may be on a carrier, e.g. siliceous material, magnesia, clays or activated alumina, which should be free from' substances promoting cracking such as iron or nickel. Compounds which yield the oxides on ignition may alternatively be used. Inert diluents such as nitrogen may be present, and atmospheric or lower pressures employed. The catalyst is periodically revivified by 'passage of air at say 450-600‹C. Activated alumina granules are impregnated with a solution of vanadium pentoxide in water and ethanolamine, dried, ignited at about 500‹C. and treated with hydrogen at 500‹C. for two hours in a " Follsained " steel tube. Preheated isopropyl benzene is led over the catalyst at about 500‹C. yielding alpha-methyl styrene and some styrene. With a furnace temperature of 520-525‹C. an increased throughput can be used.'
