Abstract

514,542. Shaping wood. CASTLE BROS. (FURNITURE), Ltd., and WOOSTER, A. S. A. May 9, 1938, No. 13845. [Class 145 (i)] To secure interchangeablility in the manufacture of chairs with loose seats, the periphery of the seats and the correspondingly shaped recess in the chair are each cut by a tool which is guided relatively to the work by cam or like guides; a machine for this purpose comprises one work support for the chair and another for the seat; also the two independent tools. The machine shown in Fig. 1 is constructed with a T-shaped frame 16 having two arms 20, 22 adapted to carry the cutting mechanism for the seat and the chair respectively. An electromotor on arm 20 drives a preferably slightly conical 'tool 26 cutting the edge of the chair seat 28 which is secured to a carrier 42 adapted to slide freely in all directions on table 38 subject to the guiding effect of a grooved guiding member secured to the underside of the carrier and coacting with a pin supported by the table coaxially with the tool 26. The other arm 22 of the machine carries an electromotor 64 driving a tool 32 engaging at least two sides of the recess in the chair frame 34. The depth of cut is determined by rollers 66. 67, 68, Fig. 5, movable vertically with the tool, one of the rollers bearing on the seatframe to obtain an L-shaped recess of constant depth. The chair is clamped to a carrier 79 which is slidably supported by rollers on guides 84, on a lower carrier 78 similarly supported on guides 82 formed on a base 80, the two sets of guides being at right-angles. The two carriers are traversed on lower guides 82 by a hand lever 144 and the movement of the upper carrier on its guides 84 is limited by two pins 108 on the carrier coacting with adjustable guide levers 86 supported by the base 80.
