Abstract

514,192. Fluid-pressure brakes. FAIRWEATHER, W. C. (Maiert, R., Majert, M., and Petry, J., trading as Hessenwerk R. Maiert Kommandit Ges. ). Jan. 6, 1939, No. 556. [Class 103 (i)] In a compressed-air brake for vehicles in which the braking pressure is regulated according to the load, there is intercalated in the air pipe leading from the control valve to the brake cylinder a pressure regulator e incorporating a through-flow valve which in the inoperative position of the brake is held in a given open position under the action of the pressure exercised by the end of a supporting spring 48 of the vehicle and which, on application of the brake, is caused to close when the braking pressure acting on a diaphragm or piston connected with the valve corresponds to the pressure due to the load acting on the valve, the arrangement being such that in the inoperative position of the brake a lever 54 acting on the valve of the pressure regulator and loaded by the pressure exercised by the vehicle-supporting spring is held in a position of rest confined by a stop 60 arranged separately from the pressure regulator, from which position it is moved only when the braking pressure effective on the valve overcomes the pressure due to the load effective on the lever. As shown, the regulator e is secured to the vehicle frame and incorporates a valve 22 normally held open by the suspension spring 48 acting through the lever 54 which is pivoted to the vehicle at 52 and normally rests against a stop 60. When the brakes are applied compressed air passes through the valve 22 until the pressure on the diaphragm 34 is sufficient to force down the stem 28 and permit the valve 22 to close. To prevent a rush of air causing the brakes to lock before the valve 22 can close, a light non-return valve 40 is adapted to be closed by the first rush of air, a small flow only being then permitted by the orifices 46. The valve 40 opens under the action of the spring 42 as soon as the flow of air ceases. A passage 26 leading to the top of the valve piston 22 serves to prevent a sudden rush of air from lifting the piston. Specification 18660/00, [Class 103], is referred to.
