Abstract

513,787. Navigational instruments for aircraft. ALDWINKLE, A. J. M. April 14, 1938, No. 11503. [Class 97 (ii)] An aircraft instrument for use in landing indicates on the one dial the transverse and longitudinal altitudes of the aircraft, the speed and its height from the landing ground. The indicator a in the shape of an aeroplane is pivoted at a and indicates the transverse altitude by means of a U-tube the air above the liquid controlling a diaphragm d the movement of which operates a rocker attached to the pivot a' A similar U-tube arranged in the longitudinal vertical plane operates in a similar manner a bar indicator e the vertical movement of which with respect to the pivot a<1> indicates the longitudinal altitude of the aircraft. To indicate the height a shadow is cast on the' lower half of the indicator by means of a shade h and pivoted lens together with a source of light so that the upper edge of the shadow k, indicates on the scale g the height of the aircraft from the ground. The lens is operated by means of a sensitive aneroid m which is pivoted so as to be inoperative at altitudes over a predetermined, height. An ordinary speed pointer f is preferably arranged to point vertically at the landing- speed.
