Abstract

513,530. Electrolytic surface treatment of aluminium and its alloys. BRITISH ALUMINIUM CO., Ltd., and PULLEN, A. N. D. April 7, 1938, No. 10634. [Class 41] The reflectivity of a clean aluminium or aluminium alloy surface is improved by immersion for a short time in an aqueous solution containing (i) sodium carbonate with or without additions of sodium tribasic orthophosphate and (ii) additions of ammonia, ammonium carbonate, phosphate or molybdate or other ammonium salts or additions of the bicarbonates or monohydrogen orthophosphates of sodium or potassium and then with out removal from the solution applying direct current anodic treatment to the article. The solution should be of pH 10 or more and at a temperature 55-80‹C. Substituted ammonium compounds such as hydroxylamine and ethylamine may be used in place of ammonium compounds. The sodium carbonate content should be about 3-20 per cent. and that of the additions about 0.5-5 per cent. An alternative bath contains 0.1-3.0 per cent. sodium or potassium hydroxide alone or with additions of the carbonates, phosphates, fluorides or molybdates of sodium, potassium or ammonium. The treatment may be followed by anodic treatment in a bisulphate bath for the provision of a protective film as described in Specification 449,162.
