[Classes 2 (ii) and 15 (i)] Processes for the treatment of yarns, foils and the like with hot liquid media under pressure, e.g. stretching, shrinking and saponifying, are carried out by passing the materials through a hot liquid medium contained in a vessel which also contains heating means for maintaining the temperature of the medium and a shield or shields so positioned as to protect the materials from disturbance due to the heating means. The best arrangement is one in which heating means is positioned on one or, preferably, both sides of the materials and a vertical shield is interposed between the path of the materials and each heating means. Alternatively, the heating means may be positioned below the materials and a wire gauze or perforated plate may be positioned between the heating means and the materials, or the materials may be surrounded by a perforated shield. The vessel is preferably kept only one-half to two-thirds full of liquid. In Figs. 2 and 3, the yarns pass between the vertical shields 15 contained in the vessel 7, which also contains a perforated coil 10 for the introduction of hot liquid medium and a perforated coil 11 for the introduction of steam. A liquid level gauge 16 also is provided. The process is particularly applicable to the treatment of yarns, foils or the like of organic derivatives of cellulose.
