Abstract

512,723. Recovery of phenols. SOUTH METROPOLITAN GAS CO., GARDNER, W. F., and STANIER, H. March 11, 1938, No. 7635. [Class 2 (iii)] Phenolic substances are recovered from aqueous liquors by extracting with a liquid alkyl ester of the general formula CnN2nO2 derived from a saturated fatty acid by esterification with a saturated monohydric alcohol. Esters referred to are propyl, butyl and amyl esters of acetic, propionic, butyric and valeric acids. In examples: (1) aqueous liquors from low' temperature carbonization processes, acidified with dilute H2SO4 to a pH of not more than 4.5, are fed through the towers 1, 2 and 3, which contain butyl acetate. Saturated solvent is drawn off from tower 1, fresh solvent being added to tower 3, and the butyl acetate and phenols are separated by distillation ; (2) aqueous condensates, formed in recovery of NH3 from liquors obtained in high temperature carbonization are treated as in example 1, the phenols being separated from butyl acetate by washing with caustic alkali solution, which is then acidified; (3) resoreinol is recovered from the aqueous solution of the products' of fusing the sodium salt of benzene-m-disulphonic acid .with caustic soda by extraction with butyl acetate as in example 1. Butyl acetate is separated from resorcinol by distillation and the latter purified by distillation under reduced pressure. Specification 328,388, [Class 2 (iii)], is referred to.
