Abstract

511,877. Extracting manganese-containing substances. THORNTON, A. A. (Kohle und Eisenforschung Ges.). March 29, 1938, No. 9576. Drawings to Specification. [Class 1(iii)] In the extraction of manganese-containing substances with sulphur dioxide or gases containing it in the presence of water, the manganese is extracted in two stages, extraction being effected to the greatest possible extent in the first stage, and the solution of manganese sulphate and dithionate thus obtained being caused to react with fresh manganese-containing substances in the second stage, without adding fresh sulphur dioxide, in order to convert the previously formed dithionate into sulphate. Alternatively, only such amounts of sulphur dioxide may be added during the second stage that the temperature does not exceed 35 ‹C., there being always sufficient excess of the fresh manganese substances that part remains unreacted. The temperature during the second stage is preferably above 25‹C., and the sulphur dioxide added at this stage may be the gases escaping from the first stage. The partly reacted ore of the second stage may be subsequently extracted in a first stage. In the case of more slowly reacting ores, these are extracted.in a first stage, and the solution obtained is mixed with a more rapidly reacting ore. A quantity of the ore which is incompletely extracted in the first stage is added to the sludge partly extracted in the second stage. The process is described with reference to the use of two dissolving tanks and a washing tank. The material is stirred therein by agitators and by causing the sulphur dioxide to issue through jets. The process may also be operated by passing the manganesecontaining substances in counterstream to water and sulphur dioxide gases. The manganesecontaining substances should be disintegrated prior to extraction. The manganese sulphate obtained by evaporation of its solution is dehydrated at 300-500‹C. and then roasted at 900-1100‹C. in a weakly oxidizing or weakly reducing atmosphere, the gases leaving the furnace preferably containing no or very little free oxygen. The sulphur dioxide evolved is re-employed. Directly or indirectly-heated furnaces may be used. The material should be stirred during decomposition. Two examples of extracting a manganese ore are given. U.S.A. Specification 2,000,211 is referred to.
