Abstract

511,790. Oxindole derivatives. GROVES, W. W. (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Feb. 23, 1938, No. 5739. [Class 2 (iii)] [Also in Group XX] A light sensitive emulsion layer in colour photographic material contains as colour former, a derivative of oxindole which contains in the molecule a group rendering it fast to diffusion. In one example, the compound is produced by dissolving oxindole in nitrated concentrated sulphuric acid, pouring on ice and reducing with tin and hydrochloric acid. After removal of tin and concentration by evaporation, the reaction product is acylated with oleic acid chloride and sulphonated with fuming sulphuric acid. In other examples, the reaction product is reacted with either octodecvlene-succinic acid anhydride or abietic acid chloride. The dyestuff component is dissolved in sodium carbonate solution and added to silver halide emulsion. Another component is produced by acylating stearylaniline with chloracetyl chloride and heating with aluminium chloride at 200‹ C. to remove hydrochloric acid. The groups which impart fastness to diffusion may be those described in 458,400, 465,823, 479,838, [all in Group XX], 483,000, 484,698, 488,048, 489,093, 489,164, 489,274, 491,958, and 491,959. The oxindole may also contain other desired constituents at the nitrogen atom, e.g., alkyl, alkoxy, aryl, halogen, oxy and nitro groups. The benzene nucleus may carry a fused-on ring or ring system and the molecule may include " solubility " groups such as sulpho, carboxyl or hydroxyl groups. Specification 478,983 and 489,161, [Group XX], also are referred to.
