Abstract

511,555. Ophthalmoscopes. HOLLOWAY, S. P. April 9, 1938, No. 10899. [Class 97 (i)] In an ophthalmoscope having a light source, the luminous beam, after passing through a multiple-apertured diaphragm is sectionally deflected by prisms and focused by a lens or lenses so that images are formed and brought edge to edge on the retina of an observed eye. The diaphragm d, illuminated by the source l and condensers c, c<1>, c<2>, is divided by a strip a into two apertures which are imaged by the lens e in the plane i, a double prism p being interposed so as to bring the straight edges of the images of the apertures close together. The projection lens f normally has its principal focus in the plane i, so that the emergent light pencils are parallel. These are reflected by the mirror n into the observed eye o, giving an image on the retina k. The lens f is adjustable by means of a drum g for focusing this image on the retina of an ametropic eye. The two reflected beams have a dark space d' between them, all the rays being parallel to, or diverging from the axis of the system, so that any rays reflected from the cornea are directed outwards. In a modification, the prism p is arranged adjacent the diaphragm d in the focal plane of the lens f, the lens e being omitted.
