Abstract

511,350. Grinding rollers. POLLAK, J. E. (Dayton Rubber Manufacturing Co.). Dec. 14, 1937, No. 34638. [Class 60] A machine for grinding rubber covered rollers comprises a frame consisting of I-beam side members 11, 12, a base 10, and an angle top beam 16, the base carrying a main driving motor 17 and an auxiliary motor 18. The motor 17 drives, by belts 20, a pulley 21 rotatably mounted on a non-rotatable axle 22, extending through bosses 23, 24 carried by the members 11, 12, and the pulley is secured to a member 41 pressed into a tube 45, a second member 44 also being pressed into the tube 45 and the pulley and members 41, 44 being rotatable on the axle 22 on ball bearings 30, 32, 34, 35; the tube 45 has on its outer surface a sheet of abrasive material 46. In order to give the grinding-roller a small axial reciprocation during its rotation, the motor 18 drives, through gearing 50, 51, 59, a bevel gear 60 having an eccentric opening in which engages a pin 62 on an arm 63 connected to one end of a lever 65 pivoted at 68 and engaging, with its upper end, a bolt 47 passing through the spindle 22. A shaft 70 is mounted in bearings 71, 72 on the front of the frame and has keyed thereto arms 73, 74 supporting a feed roller 75, driven, through chain gearing 77 ... 82, by the motor 18, in a direction opposite to that of the grinding roller 45, the roller 104 being ground being placed in the nip between the rollers 45, 75 and in order to accommodate rollers 104 of different diameters, the roller 75 is movable towards and from the roller 45 by movement of the arms 73, 74 and the shaft 70 by worm gearing 86, 87 and a handwheel 83 In order to support the roller being ground, a shaft 90, extending half way across the machine, is mounted in supports on the angle bar 16 and has keyed thereon an arm 93, a similar shaft 96 carrying an arm 98 also being mounted on the frame. The shafts carry bar members 94, 95 respectively, the bars and shafts being relatively angular adjustable to align the arms 93, 98 by a pin 99 and screws 101, 102; the arms 93, 98 carry adjustable bifurcated parts in which are seated the axle 103 of the roller 104 being ground. In order to press the roller 104 with a predetermined pressure against the grinding roller 45, a lever 105 is rotatably mounted on the shaft 90, the arm 107 of the lever being adjustably connected by a slot 120 and bolt 121 to an arm 109 keyed on the shaft 90, the arm 109 carrying, in a pivot pin 110, a threaded rod 111 adjustable by nuts 112, 113 and extending through a pivot pin 119 on an arm 114 keyed to the shaft 70 and acted on by springs 115, 117; an arm 106 of lever 105 engages a screw 108 adjustably mounted in the angle bar 16 to prevent movement of the roller 104 towards the roller 45 when grinding is completed. The abrasive covering 46 of the roller 45, which covering may be of sandpaper or emery cloth, is applied by passing the left hand end, Fig. 5, through a slot in the roller and clamping it, and then winding the strip diagonally on the roller, the other end being passed through a slot.139, Fig. 9, in the roller and through a slot 132 in a rotatable spring urged sleeve 131 so that on releasing the sleeve, the spring causes this to rotate and so to tighten the covering 46. In order to hold down the roller being ground, rollers 150, Fig. 12, are provided on arms 151 pressed by springs 152 and pivoted to members 154 slidably adjustable in members 158 keyed to the shaft 90, the various supporting means for the roller being so adjusted that the axis of the roller being ground lies in a horizontal plane with the axis of the grinding roller 45. In order to collect dust from the grinding zone, a bin 170 is provided to which air is supplied by a blower 177, air being re-circulated by a duct 179.
