Abstract

510,851. Diamond tools. DIAMOND TOOLS, Ltd., and ECCLES, R. P. Jan. 14, 1939, No. 1313. [Class 124] [Also in Group XXII] A tool-holder for a diamond or like cutter, suitable for use in a boring-bar, face-plate &c. comprises a body or barrel adapted to be secured in the boring-bar &c. carrying a micrometer screw engaging a carrier for the cutter, the screw and body having a circular or arcuate scale in a plane transverse to the axis of the screw. The diamond &c. cutter f is attached in known manner to the head e of a shank d which is slidably keyed within a sleeve a by one or two dowels g. The sleeve a which is spring-tempered is split at b as far as c and is compressed on the shank and held within a boring-bar h by means of a set screw j. A micrometer screw k engages a tapped hole in the shank and is held with its head against the base of a recess in the sleeve by a spring p. The screw head is provided with an index mark o, Fig. 2, reading against a scale m on the annular end of the sleeve. In a modification the screw is necked at t, Fig. 5, to receive a yoke v engaging a recess in the sleeve a whereby it is prevented from moving axially, or alternatively the yoke might be soldered to the end of the sleeve or replaced by a grub screw. The dowels g might be replaced by a key caulked into a slot in the shank d and sliding in the saw-cut b of the sleeve a. The screw j engages a recess in the sleeve a and several recesses may be provided to allow for adjustment of the cutter to different diameters. The boring- bar or face-plate may carry a single cutter or a number of cutters set to take the same or different cuts.
