509,469. Metallurgical furnaces. AURIOL, A., and AURIOL, A. Jan. 13, 1938, No. 1178. Convention date, July 19, 1937. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, July 20, 1938.] [Class 51 (ii)] In a process for the reduction of metals, finely pulverised ore and a reducing agent are projected with air, by injectors i, upwards along the walls of a vertical shaft a which narrows towards the top and is of sufficient height to prevent the discharge of the suspended material through the top opening o, the material being preheated during its upward and downward travel, and collecting in a zone 13 where reduction is effected, the metal being finally melted from the lower part of the reduction zone by a flame projected by a burner k into the hearth chamber h. The material is caused to collect in the reduction zone during the initial stages of working by a plate f inserted through the slot g, and after removal of this plate is supported by the constriction f. Additional heat may be supplied to the reduction zone by burners c delivering into a heating jacket, which also receive through fiues m the gases from the chamber h, and the gases from this jacket may pass to the main body of the shaft. The reducing agent may be supplied direct to the reduction zone instead of through the injectors i. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes similar ore roasting- furnaces with removable hearths for receiving the roasted ore. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
